Cults & World Religions

According to: Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, copyright 1960:

Occult: 1. Hidden from sight; obscure. 2. Of, pertaining to, concerned with, or designating alchemy, magic, astrology and other arts and practices involving use of divination, incantation, magical formulae, etc. 3. Beyond the scope of the understanding; mysterious. – n. That which is occult; esp., the occult arts, or sciences.

Cult: a group of people who worship any deity that is not the true God of the Bible, and thus hold to teachings that are outside of true biblical Christianity .

There are some 6,000 known cults in America.  We are listing and expounding on the beliefs of some of the most well known.  Some people might regard some of these as “denominations” of Christianity; but be assured they ARE NOT denominations.  All their teachings are not true; but are deceptions.

The Bible warns us how deception will come to us and that all deception is ultimately self-deception, aided by Satan’s schemes.

Matthew 24:3,4,5 - …the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us when shall these things be?  And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? [transl. age]– {There is no such thing as “the end or the world” - Is 45:17; Eph 3:21}

 v.4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceives you. v.5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many… .”

Matthew 24:10,11,12 - And then shall many be offended and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Matthew 24:37-44 – “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark.  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so, shall also the coming of the Son of man be…Watch therefore; for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.  But know this that if the Goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore, be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”

This is akin to, “Don’t let the uncertainty of the timing of His coming be a certainty that it won’t be soon!” (Walt)

1 John 4:1 – Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Matthew 15:9 – But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. {This is the fault of denominationalism}

Romans 1:20-22“For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”

How should Christians react to false teachers of Scripture?

We are to mark and avoid them.
Romans 16:17
We are to come out from among them and be separate.
We are to have no fellowship but reprove (expose) darkness.
II Corinthians 6:17
We are to turn away.
II Timothy 3:5
We are to rebuke them.
Titus 1:13
We are to reject such persons.
Titus 3:10
We are to withdraw.
II Thessalonians 3:6
We are to note and have no company.
II Thessalonians 3:14
We are to not receive any into our house nor bid them God speed "For he that bids him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."
II John 1:10,11
